Your Instagram 2025 Updated Content Size & Dimensions Guide for the New Instagram Feed (Updated May 2025)

BRAND NEW UPDATE (May 29, 2025)

As I was getting ready to publish this post, we got this update from Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram. So we will incorporate this into our updates sizing guide and recommendations!

If you’re designing content for Instagram in 2025, you’ve probably noticed: things look a little different.

Posts don’t always show up in your grid the way you designed them. Reels get cropped. And square graphics? Not always so square anymore.

That’s because Instagram’s layout and post dimensions have changed—and if you’re creating content for yourself or clients, knowing the new Instagram sizes is key to a feed that looks polished, professional, and totally on-brand.

This 2025 Instagram sizing guide has everything you need to design with confidence—including exact post dimensions, grid preview sizes, and Canva design tips that make your life easier. Let’s dive in.

What’s the new Instagram grid size in 2025?

Instagram's profile grid has shifted away from the classic 1:1 square preview. In 2025, the grid now displays posts in a 3:4 portrait crop. That means your beautifully designed square or vertical posts may get awkwardly cropped at the top and bottom unless you adjust your design.

🧠 Pro tip: Even though your original post size might be 1080x1350 px (more on that below), the grid will only preview the center 1080x1350 px portion in a tighter crop.

So, designing with this in mind is key.

What are the current Instagram post dimensions in 2025?

Here are the official and practical sizes you need to know:

👉 Instagram Feed Posts & Carousels

  • OLD FEED POST SIZE: Square (1:1 ratio): 1080 x 1080 px (no longer recommended, as it gets very cropped in the new grid preview)

  • CURRENT STANDARD FEED POST SIZE: Portrait (4:5 ratio): 1080 x 1350 px (recommended for max screen real estate)

  • BRAND NEW FEED POST SIZE: Portrait (3:4 Ratio) 1013 x 1350 px (Instagram is now allowing this post size that aligns perfectly with the new taller grid)

  • REELS, COVERS AND STORIES: Landscape (1.91:1 ratio): 1080 x 566 px (used less often, but still supported)

👉 Instagram Grid Preview Size

  • 3:4 aspect ratio

  • Approximate display: 1013 x 1350 px, center-cropped

👉 Instagram Reels and Stories

  • Full screen size: 1080 x 1920 px (9:16)

  • Instagram Reels Covers shown in feed/grid are cropped to 1013 x 1350 px (3:4)

How about Instagram Puzzles, Banner and Static Grids?

Save these custom dimensions you can use for puzzles (which are those bigger grid images composed of split parts of an image):

  • 3-part: 3039 x 1350 px

  • 6-part: 3039 x 2700 px

  • 9-part: 3039 x 4050 px

  • 12-part: 3039 x 5400 px

Why did Instagram change the grid format?

Instagram’s newer layout prioritizes vertical content, especially Reels. The platform is clearly moving to a video-forward, mobile-first experience, where taller content performs better because it takes up more screen space.

But with that change comes some chaos: a lot of creators noticed their perfectly balanced grids started looking off—cut-off headers, missing faces, or weird crops. That’s why it’s essential to design with these changes in mind.

How to design Instagram posts in Canva for the 2025 format

Here’s how to make sure your Canva graphics don’t get cropped:

🔥 Start with the right template size.

For feed posts, go with 1080 x 1350 px to take advantage of the taller format. For Reels, use 1080 x 1920 px.

🔥 Keep text and key visuals centered.

Remember: anything near the top or bottom might get cut off in the grid preview. Keep important content in the middle safe zone.

🔥 Preview your post.

In Canva, zoom out and visualize how it’ll look when cropped to a 3:4 preview. Or use a grid overlay to plan it visually.

🔥 Use pre-made templates designed for 2025 sizes.

Not to toot our own horn (ok, maybe a little)… but if you’re a member of Your Template Club, every single one of our Canva templates for Instagram is already designed to fit 2025’s updated dimensions—so you can just drop in your content and go.

How does this affect my Instagram aesthetic?

If you’ve been curating a grid with careful rows, puzzle feeds, or color themes, the new 3:4 preview size can throw things off. But don’t panic—you can still have a great-looking feed.

Some quick aesthetic tips:

👉 Batch design with the grid preview in mind. Use a visual planner (like Metricool, Planoly or Later) to preview how your upcoming posts will look.

👉 Use consistent padding in your posts. If you always design within the safety margins (which you can see as a rectangle when moving elements around in Canva), the crop won’t hurt your layout.

👉 Choose brand elements that work well when cropped. For example, centered text, middle-aligned logos, and balanced visuals.

👉 Keep an eye on color and contrast. Since only part of your post will show up in the grid, make sure that section still looks good—and on-brand.

FAQs: Instagram Sizes & Layout Changes (2025 Edition)

What is the best Instagram post size in 2025?
The best size for most feed posts is still 4:5 ratio, or 1080 x 1350 px. It gives you vertical space and looks great in both the feed and grid, as long as you use margins.

Our recommendation for this may change in the near feature as we learn whether most people have access to posting and viewing 3:4 images.

What size should I design Reels in?

Stick with 1080 x 1920 px, the standard full-screen vertical format. This hasn’t changed.

Is the Instagram grid still square?
Not anymore! The 2025 grid preview is a 3:4 portrait crop—not the old 1:1 square or the standard 4:5 ratio post.

How do I avoid my content being cropped?
Design with a center-focused layout and avoid putting text or important visuals near the top and bottom edges.

TL;DR: Instagram Sizes You Need in 2025

👉 Recommended size for Feed posts and Carousels: 1080 x 1350 px or 1012 x 1350 (portrait)
👉 Grid preview crop: 3:4 (centered portion of your post)
👉 Instagram Reels, Reels Covers and Stories size: 1080 x 1920 px
👉 Square is better than nothing —but isn’t the best use of space and created a cropped and messy grid, so it should be avoided.
